If I were to summarize this week in 2 words would be “zero motivation.” Every single day was a struggle to muster up the energy to do anything. The week started off challenging with the time change, then just went downhill from there. Not the best thing 2 weeks before a Half Marathon and 10 weeks before a Full. Here’s how it went down:
Monday, March 12
AM: The time change this time of year always kills me. I know it’s only an hour, but it feels like a huge difference. After almost 8 hrs of sleep I still couldn’t drag myself out of bed to get to the pool for a 6 am swim. I suppose I could go after work, but I prefer to swim first thing in the AM when the pool is “less used.”
Tuesday, March 13
AM: Had high hopes to head to the pool but repeated what happened on Monday. It was like Groundhog Day.
PM: 1-hr Run (6.11 miles)
I headed out for an easy 1-hour run, fully expecting to run in the rain. I was mentally prepared for it, which of course meant that it *didn’t* rain. I guess I lucked out, but I also overdressed. With every mile I seemed to peel off layer after layer (note to self: rain doesn’t always mean cold).
Wednesday, March 14
I had to be in the office before 6 am so I took a rare lunch break and went to a mid-day Vinyasa Yoga class. The free class is offered in the Dungeon (aka the basement) of my office building so I really didn’t have an excuse not to go. It had been about a week and a half since I’d been to a yoga class because I was getting a little tired of it. What I realized is that I was getting tired of Bikram, not Yoga. It was refreshing to take a class and not know what poses were coming up next (vs. the same 26 poses in every Bikram class).
Thursday, March 15
I was supposed to do a 5-mile run of 400′s but it was a bad run from the get go. The weather was terrible and there was debris and huge puddles of water everywhere. My Garmin couldn’t get a decent signal and kept reading that I was running a 19+ min/mile. To top it off I was wearing my “rain shoes” that I felt clunky and heavy. I called the run after 2 miles then came home and jumped on the Bike Trainer for an hour.
Friday, March 16
I attempted a redo of Thursday’s run, this time on the treadmill. Again, I made it 2-miles then called it quits. Physically I felt fine but just couldn’t muster the motivation or desire to finish the run.
Saturday, March 17
I had an 8-miler on the schedule but after failed runs 2 days in a row my Coach told me to take the weekend off – to rest, rejuvenate and then resume training on Monday. So I did.
Sunday, March 18
Not the week I had hoped for, but I’m glad it ended on a high note.
This week I’m looking forward to:
• New things to practice in swimming
• A group run along the Embarcadero in the City with the promise of a post-run grilled cheese dinner!
• The Oakland Running Festival Half-Marathon!
