Garmin Training Center

The other night, I sat on my couch battling my Garmin. The workout that my running coach had prescribed for the next morning had a lot of steps and I was unsure how to program it. I tried scheduling "Repeats" using the "Custom" feature, but it wouldn't let me pick 1 step to repeat. Instead, it forced me to repeat all the steps in-between as well.

I posted this tweet:

Not surprisingly, RoadBunner offered to help. She was the one who first introduced me to all the nifty capabilities of Garmin. So I gave her a call and we sat on the phone for about 30 minutes unsuccessfully trying to figure out how to program it.

I hung up, resigned to the fact that I would have to keep watching my wrist and hit "lap" over and over again.

Then I checked Twitter and got this tweet response:

Wait. What?!? I can program the workout on my computer and then "send" it to my Garmin?!? How did I not know this!?

And better yet: What is the Garmin Training Center?!?

I immediately downloaded it and had a huge epiphany:

I have been a Garmin owner since 2007. My first Garmin was a 305. When I used it, apparently I used the Garmin Training Center. Except typical me, didn't pay attention to what it was actually called. Then, in 2009, when I got my 310XT, it directed me to the web-based Garmin Connect. I honestly thought it was the upgraded version of the GTC. Up until this tweet, I had no idea they were 2 different programs.

Shortly there after, I received this second tweet from Glen - who is super cool despite being a fan of bankrupt baseball... :) - with links to blogposts he wrote on how to use the GTC.

I went straight to work, programming my workout. Turns out it was pretty easy to do:

And even though I used the GTC when I had my 305, I didn't know that you could "send" it to your Garmin. I hit "Send to Device" and voila - it was all scheduled to go!

Yesterday morning I headed to the park, turned on my Garmin and pressed "Start." The whole thing worked like a charm - no mishaps whatsoever!

{Why yes, I did walk on every recovery break...so what of it?}
