It's June 4th and its a cool, rainy Saturday in the Bay Area. While others complain about it...I love it.
Rain is calming, cleansing and for one thing, its perfect running weather. Yes, running in the rain is one of my most favorite things to do.
I remember the first time I ran in the rain. It was November 2008, a week before the Big Sur Half Marathon, my very first race of any kind.
My friend Veronica, who I ran the race with, met me at my house and we drove to Sawyers Camp together for a 10-miler. The weather was gloomy but it didn't start raining until we were well into our run. I remember feeling gloriously exhilarated.
There's something about pushing yourself, with sweat dripping down your face, mixed in with the rain washing away your worries, your fears, your inhibitions. It was one of the most freeing moments I've ever experienced, and ever since then, I've been addicted to running in the rain.
I'm so sad that my bum foot is keeping me from running in the rain today. Instead, I swam amongst some fierce swimmers who made the pool feel like choppy waters. I found myself wondering if that was what it felt like to swim outdoors in the rain. So I went with it and imagined that was what I was doing...
...yeah, it wasn't the same thing, but at least I can reflect back on those moments that were.
And this my friends is my 500th post.
