The Wave Guy

I work in San Bruno which is less than 5 minutes away from Aunty Virgie's house in South City. When my schedule isn't too busy, I go over for lunch, usually once or twice a week. In the past 10 years that I've lived in the Bay Area, its become "homebase." She and Uncle Jerry have lived there for over 30 years.

Every time I drive through the neighborhood, I pass a house that I named, "The Wave Guy's" house. The "Wave Guy" is this man who, everyday, sits on a chair in his garage and waves at all the cars that drive by. Sometimes, he even has a glove on a stick that he holds up as his "wave." He's been there for as long as I can remember.

Uncle Jerry always used to tell us that guy was his friend. We never believed him, but sure enough, when he passed away, the "Wave Guy" came to pay his condolences. We found out his name was Brian.

So today, on my way to Aunty's house for lunch, I drove by Brian's house and saw the garage door closed. In the driveway was an empty chair with a wreath hanging on the garage door. There was a growing collection of flowers lying on the ground. He passed away?!? I was shocked! I called Shari immediately and she had heard from Jeff that he had likely passed away. This makes me so sad. I've never officially met Brian but I feel like I knew him and he was my friend. I always waved at him and he always waved back at me. I sure will miss seeing him and the friendliness that he brought to the neighborhood. Rest in peace "Wave Guy."
