I’m up early on a Saturday and feel like I should be getting ready to go for a run (or to the gym), but it’s a rest day. I barely know what to do with myself.

This time last Saturday I was starting the 4-hour drive from Vancouver, WA to north Seattle. We had a whirlwind day of outlet shopping. The next morning I made the round trip back by myself to catch a flight home.

I intend to keep things much more mellow this weekend.

Last night we went to the movies. I hate the way movies either start during the dinner hour, or at my bedtime. So what did we do? We got some sushi takeout (again) and snuck it into the theatre. At first I felt bad and waited until the lights dimmed before whipping out my spicy tuna roll, but the couple sitting next to us had chips/salsa and burritos stashed in their bag so I didn’t feel so bad after all.

We saw Horrible Bosses.

It was hilarious, disturbing and had a great cast. Going into the flick, I didn’t know anything about it, but I left liking it much more than I thought I would.

Today will be spent doing a gazillion errands and projects around the house that I keep putting off every weekend. My goals are to:

1. Organize and file bills and paperwork and shred old receipts. There is a year’s worth of crap piled on to my desk that I just can’t look at anymore.
2. Read the pile of mail that has accumulated over the past 2 weeks.
3. Figure out what the heck to do with my running bibs and medals. They are sitting on a bookshelf, driving me crazy.

I’m sure you can imagine the messy piles that are spread throughout my house.

I want to get all of this done today so that I can enjoy my Sunday. I’m planning on running in Golden Gate Park again. There’s a group of us running our own different distances and paces, but we picked a time and place to meet to have Ramen for our post-run lunch. It’s becoming quite the Sunday tradition.

Practice Gratitude 365

Last week I was overwhelmed with stories of trials and tragedies that others have endured. It made me realize that I have had a pretty great life and I should be thankful for it every single day.

If I don’t “write things down”, I likely won’t remember it, so I created this web site for myself.

At the end of every day, I take a moment and pick one (or more) things that made me happy, or I should be thankful for. I don’t write long posts, but I added a link to it in the bottom of this site. It’s mostly just for personal reflection, and it’s a great way to end the day.

My cousin Jenna is a teacher in China and is home for a few weeks for summer vacation so I’m spending a few days visiting her and the family in Vancouver, Washington.

It’s been a busy few days so far:

- the night that I arrived, her younger brother Riley and his Little League All-Star team was their district championship and are headed to the State Tournament this weekend. We’re all heading up to Seattle this weekend for it!

- yesterday i went on a 7-mile run. I didn’t get out the door until lunch time, but thankfully it was overcast and cool. I ran a mile and a half to the track, 4 miles at the track and then back home. It was a good one.

- in the afternoon we hung out in downtown Portland in the Pearl District and went to my all-time favorite Lululemon store. I got Jenna her very first pair of Lulu clothing – the Groove Pants! I’m so excited to introduce her to the world of Lulu! After Lulu we walked to Powell’s Books – Portland’s famous book store and spent hours there! there is just so many good books to read!

- we stopped off at pf chang’s (because she wanted american chinese food and had never been to pf chang’s before) for happy hour. 4 appetizer dishes for under $20 – can’t beat that!it was our dinner!

- and finally, we went to the midnight showing of this:

jenna, aunty delta (her mom), vanda (her friend) and i got our tickets over a month ago for the midnight showing here. we are huge fans and read all the books and have seen all the movies (in fact we also watched the Deathly Hallows Part 1 twice yesterday!).

but we aren’t the type to stand in line for hours. We did a drive by of the theatre on the way back from Portland and it wasn’t too bad at 7 pm. we called the theatre and they said it was playing on 9 screens and the doors opened at 10:45 pm. we got there at 11 pm and the line wrapped around the building but moved quickly. We probably only stayed in line for maybe 30 minutes.

but once the movie was ready to begin, there were technical difficulties with the projector! the theatre was patient at first, but after a few minutes everyone started to get antsy. They finally got it going 30 minutes late and it was worth it!

IT WAS PERFECT!

i won’t give away any spoilers, but as a huge HP fan, I was very happy with it!

Now that it’s all over, I don’t know what to do with myself….

…except go and see it again? I think I foresee an HP marathon in my future!

Friday Night

Went to the movies and saw this:

Instead of theatre food, we snuck sushi into the theatre. I’m sure the people around me loved smelling my spicy tuna rolls, but way better than the gross nachos they serve there, right? However, my cousin did get some popcorn and I ate a few using chopsticks – a first for me, but you know what? It worked – my hands didn’t get dirty at all!

The movie itself was okay. I think we all know it isn’t going to win any Academy Awards, but it was entertaining – for the most part. I was just so happy to be in air conditioning.

Saturday

Had dinner at the Yard house, a favorite restaurant that I frequent when I’m in Arizona. They just opened one at Santana Row in San Jose. I had a Shrimp Caesar salad (sans dressing), then indulged in this:

{kona coffee ice cream sundae – my absolute favorite ice cream flavor!}

Which quickly turned into this:

Don’t worry, I shared it with my cousin and we scraped off the whipped cream. This was my one indulgence for the weekend.

After dinner we went to the HP Pavilion where I revisited my 8th grade self and saw these guys:

We had bought our tickets for this show 7 months ago, but I had forgotten all about it and wasn’t even sure of the exact date until about a week ago. I felt so lackadaisical going into the evening, but once NKOTB came on stage, it was like 1989 all over again!

Back in 1999, I wasn’t as crazy about BSB as I had been about NKOTB, but I still knew all of their tunes, which made it one of those great shows where I could sing just about every song!

My photos and videos turned out terrible, but here’s some vids that I found online…

…And yes, their songs have been added to my running play list!

Sunday

It wouldn’t be a proper weekend without a run, now would it?

For the second weekend in a row, I got to meet up with my favorite Bay Area runners/bloggers/tweeters.

{in front of the Conservatory of Flowers}

This time we met in the City for an almost 7-mile run around Golden Gate Park. This area of the City is usually foggy, but on this day we were punished with “stupid heat.” It was waaay too warm, but somehow we made the ascent up to the infamous Strawberry Hill, a steep, half-mile corkscrew climb. It was more of a hike than a run up this hill for me, but we made it to the top!

{atop Strawberry Hill}

After our run we all headed to Genki Ramen for lunch!

Half of us are obsessed with ramen. It’s my typical dinner on nights before a long run, but some of the other girls swear it’s the perfect post-run meal. Either way works! And in case you haven’t heard of ramen before, here’s what it looks like:

{noodles with vegetables or pork or chicken or seafood in broth}

I’m told that it’s kinda like pho (except I’ve never had pho) but with more flavor. Sooooo good!

Later that evening I went to a potluck family dinner. It’s impossible to eat healthy at these things because of spreads like this:

I couldn’t resist – I had a bit of everything but just in little portion sizes. Can I call that a win? Please?

Monday

After a crazy weekend, I needed some downtime and never left my house until we reconvened for a “leftovers” family dinner.

Fireworks weren’t coming on till way past my bedtime and I had to be up at 6 am for a 6-miler this morning so I called it a day and was in bed before the fireworks even started. I’m such a party animal, aren’t I?

Here’s to a short workweek – may it go by quickly!

First let me start by saying Happy Thursday! Only 2 more days to the weekend!

If you’ve read my blog from 2 Springs ago, you will know that I am a huge fan, HUGE fan of Sex and the City. When the SATC movie came out in May 2008, I was in heaven! My cousin and I bought tickets for the opening night weeks in advance and I think I saw that movie in the theatre about 6 times over a 2 week period.

Well, my Google Reader is filled with approximately 195 subscriptions and one of the blogs I subscribe to is Chic Alert. They have been posting updates of the Sex and the City sequel that is due out this Spring. Today they announced that the new trainer was just released! I cannot wait – let the countdown begin!

Now back to what I really wanted to write about today:

What is it about January that feels so “blah?” As much as I’ve been excited about the New Year, it’s also been kind of a downer. I’ve even had a meltdown or two, though I can’t really say why . Too much stress? Too much reflection on the new year? Lack of Vitamin D from no sun? Probably all of the above. But I also attribute it to not enough sleep. I once read an article that said sleep is just as important as diet and exercise.

Last week I averaged about 5 hours of sleep – not good when I need a minimum of 7 hours every night. I thought I could catch up on sleep last weekend but that didn’t happen. It was such a bummer to have had 3 whole days to sleep in but wasn’t able to on any of them. When it came time to start this work week, I knew I had to get more sleep or else I’d be a cranky mess. So this week I’ve been forcing myself to go to bed between 8:30-9 pm, getting 8-8.5 hours of sleep. Its been glorious and has made a world of difference. But that’s also why I haven’t written much this week. I’ve sacrificed writing for sleep…and it was well worth it.

Now that I’ve been getting enough sleep, this week feels feel brighter, lighter and happier. And so far, this young Thursday has been the best day of all!

This morning I woke up and checked my work email to find that the power is out in the building and the office is closed to employees. Yay! – hopefully it will stay that way all day so I can work from home and not have to battle another rainy commute. Then, I went to the gym for a morning swim workout and the pool was empty — I had it all to myself! I’m still such a beginner in the pool that I get nervous when other people are there. Being by myself allowed me to be relaxed and not get distracted by other people. It was by far the most enjoyable swim workout I’ve had in a long time.

Workouts
Since I haven’t written much this week, here’s a quick rundown of what I’ve been up to:

Monday: Yoga
Tuesday: Weight Training
Wednesday: Strength & Conditioning, Core Training in the AM, and a 3-mile run on the treadmill in the PM
Thursday: 60 min pool workout

You can read the details of the workouts on my Daily Mile log.

This Week’s Menu
I also cooked another big meal on Monday that I’ve been eating all week. Its a Chicken Tortilla Casserole that I got from my friend Wendy. I’ve made it many times before, but it’d a while since I last made it. Here’s the recipe:

Ingredients:

    * 2 cups shredded chicken breast (I buy an already cooked roast chicken and debone it)
* 1 tsp chile powder
* 1/4 tsp salt
* 1/4 tsp pepper
* 1/2 cup chopped green onions
* 2 tbsp grated parmesan cheese
* 1/2 cup low-fat shredded monterey jack cheese, divided
* 2 7oz cans of green tomatillo jalapeno salsa
* 3/4 cup 1% milk (I use soy milk)
* 12 white corn tortillas
* Cooking spray

Directions:

1. Spray 11X7″ glass baking dish with cooking spray
2. In medium bowl combine chicken, chile powder, salt, pepper, green onions parmesan cheese & 1/4 cup of the monterey jack cheese
3. In separate bowl combine green tomatillo jalapeno salsa and milk
4. In a nonstick skillet, on medium high heat, warm the 12 tortillas (about 10 seconds on each side)
5. Pour 1/3 of green salsa mixture in bottom of baking dish
6. Layer 4 tortillas over salsa mixture. Top with 1/2 of the chicken mixture. Layer 4 more tortillas followed by second 1/2 of chicken mixture. Top with last 4 tortillas.
7. Top with remaining 2/3 of green salsa mixture.
8. Sprinkle remaining 1/4 cup of monterey jack cheese over the top.
9. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes

* 347 calories each

The recipe says it makes 4 servings but I’ve been eating it for lunch and dinner since Monday. My friends think I’m nuts for doing this, but I don’t mind. Its very yummy and so easy to make! (but next week I will be mixing the menu up more…) And I must admit…I did put a little more than 1/4 c of cheese on the top.

I’m looking forward to the rest of today, especially going to the Stanford vs OSU basketball game tonight. I’m not really a college basketball fan, but its always fun to go to games and I’m looking forward to catching up with friends I haven’t seen in a while.

Let me close by leaving you with this one quote that’s inspired me over the past 2 weeks:

“You live longer once you realize that any time spent being unhappy is wasted.”

Have a great Thursday!

After a weekend of doing nothing, I’m now having a super busy…and stressful week. Lots of meetings and commitments, some of which have thrown me off my normal schedule. And I’m a creature of habit, when my routine changes, I get out of sync. So how do I deal with it?

- Anticipate and plan accordingly
I knew this week was going to be busy and I wouldn’t have a lot of time to cook, run errands, etc. So I got most of my errands done last week and scheduled the rest for this weekend. I also cooked a huge pot of taco soup on Sunday, and though not ideal, I’ve been eating it every day (and night) since then. Unlike most people, I don’t mind eating the same things a few days in a row so eating leftovers throughout the week is fine with me. Its a huge time saver and helps me stick to my goal of eating healthy. But thankfully, I finished off the soup last night.

- Schedule my workouts
I usually do this anyway, but this week I planned out exactly what I was going to do in each (non-class) workout this week. I wanted made sure to stick to my schedule and not skip any workouts because I was tired and stressed. For example, I had a lot of meetings yesterday and figured I would be too tired to drive to Stanford last night for my track workout with the Tattersoles. So when I planned out my week last Sunday, I decided that for Wednesday night’s workout would be intervals on the treadmill at the gym, followed by time in the whirlpool and steam room. So instead of being unprepared for a gym workout, then feeling guilty about skipping one, I packed all my gear, took it to work with me and was prepared to go straight to the gym after work. It was a great workout.

- Read
Reading destresses me and helps to clear my mind before going to sleep. I try to read for at least 30 min before bed. This week I’m reading a book on WordPress so I can learn how to do more cool things with this site. I’m also reading an old book that a friend gave me a few years ago called “How To Be Lovely.”

Its a book of quotes by Audrey Hepburn. She’s the epitome of class and elegance and I’m loving reading it again. Its also reminding me that I should be graceful in difficult situations, which in the long run, is probably saving me from future angst.

As long as this week has been, I actually can’t believe that its already Thursday. I got a pool workout in this morning. I called it “Death by Cologne.” You must read about it here. I only have 2 days left to get through this week. If I can manage to do that, then I’ll have a nice 3-day weekend ahead of me!

What made me happy today:
Well, since I haven’t written in a couple of days, I have some catching up to do:

Tuesday: good friends who are great listeners
Wednesday: my Dad – Happy Birthday Dad!
Thursday: Google Reader recommends new blogs for me to follow. Today this Lululemon Addict blog. I’m in love.

Photo of the Day:

This sign hangs on the wall between the lunchroom and bathroom at work, so I walk by it about 20 times a day. Its a helpful little reminder that helps me get through the week.

I’ve been writing a blog since 2007 and at the end of the past couple of years, I take some time to go back and read through what I wrote over the previous 12 months – sometimes even farther back than that. Its so much fun to relive the moments. This is a recap of my favorite postings from 2009 (along with a random photo or two from that month).

From January to June, my blog was hosted on Blogger, and from January to March, I didn’t really blog much. I can’t remember exactly why, but I think it was because I had a huge project in February that made January a stressful blur (just thinking about it still gives me nightmares). Anyway, point is, blog postings were slim pickings during Q1 of 2009.

January
I was just beginning to experiment with including video in my blog posts and posted these videos from my Fall 2007 trip to Paris.

At this time I wasn’t that into running yet. Having just come off of my first half-marathon 8 weeks prior I thought I needed another 6 months before I could do another one.

Rang in the New Year in Seattle (Pike's Place)

February
There was only blog post I made in February, but it was a good one that consisted of just one sentence:

“that which matters most should never give way to that which matters the least.”

I need to refer back to this more often.

March
I had signed up for my second Half Marathon – the Seattle Rock ‘n Roll – and began training in March. This is one of my first blog posts about training for this race and it lists my favorite treadmill workout.

Spring Training ’09 Photos

April
April was a fun month because:

1. I went to the Britney Spears concert. Yes, I love her – don’t judge. Her music is great for dancing and running.

2. I learned that what you eat has an even more profound effect on your body than how much you workout. And thankfully I did because I got injured on Easter weekend (an injury that still nags me today) and had to curtail my workouts dramatically.

3. Baseball season started – enough said.

I couldn’t pick just one blog post for April so…click here to read them all.

Opening Day Lineups

Raindrops kept falling on us the entire game

May
This was my favorite post in May, and I don’t need to say anything more about it.

I told her to smile.

June
In June I moved my blog over to WordPress. My main reason for doing this is to learn some new Web skills. I went through the process of buying my domain name (if you’re wondering, I couldn’t think of a creative one and just copied Kady’s email with my own name), setting up a Web hosting account, then working on the layout of my blog – and choosing and designing a template. It was a lot of hard work, but I learned a lot and I’m glad I gained some of those skills.

And, after 2 months of physical therapy, I ran my second half-marathon in Seattle. Of the 3 halves I’ve ran, Seattle is still my favorite.

My race sign!

Also, from this point on, a lot of my posts are about training for the races I ran in the 2H of the year.

July
I started a new adventure in July – swimming lessons! Just because you grow up in Hawai’i doesn’t mean you know how to swim. Let me clarify…

In Hawai’i, we go to the beach to boogie board and just splash/float around in the ocean; we’re not actually swimming laps…at least I never did and so I never did learn how to swim with proper form. So as soon as the Seattle race was over, I started swimming lessons and found that its a complete workout without the harsh impact on your body. It was the best thing I’ve done this year.

August
I ran the Giants 5K race in August – the race where we got to cross home plate. Up until this race I always thought 5K’s were easy because they’re only 3 miles. But here I learned how hard 5K’s are – in some ways much harder than a half-marathon! I ran it with my friend Yvette who’s much faster than I am. She set our pace which was a lot faster than I would have run alone, but I kept up with her, making this one of my proud moments of the year. I felt really good after this race and now I have a much respect for the 5K.

September
This post is a mishmash (as its aptly titled) of random topics, but the reason I chose this one is because I got to spectate my first triathlon ever. Triathlons fascinate me and one day (perhaps maybe even in 2010?) I hope to do one. That’s why I was so excited to finally get the chance to see one in person.

Hiking in Oregon

October
I ran another race in October. This one was a 12K – the first time I’d run a race with this distance. As you can read, this was one a struggle, but I did it and had a great time doing so. But it was also at this race that I realized what a lonely sport running can be. For whatever reason, I ended up doing this race alone without anyone there with me (to run or spectate). I was fine with this until after the race when I saw the other runners with their cheerers. It made me kinda sad…but on a bright note, I love the photo of me with the GGB in the background – it ended up being my Christmas card photo this year.

November
There’s 2 posts from November that are my favorites:

1. The one about my 1st Runniversary because it reminded me of how far I’ve come in the past year.

2. The one about the Mermaid 5K race because it was seriously one of my favorite race experiences ever. I am definitely doing more Mermaid events in 2010!

December
December’s fav post has to be the one about Vegas because it was the culmination of 16 weeks of training and another 3 months of physical therapy.

When I look back at where I started the year and compare it to where I am now I realize how much I’ve learned and how far I’ve progressed. It was a year of setbacks and frustrations, but also one of hard work and most importantly, fun! I didn’t really start 2009 with specific goals, but one of the things I learned this year is not only to set goals, but to be specific about them, write them down and have a plan for accomplishing them. I’m definitely working on this for 2010 and will share them soon!

Have a safe and Happy New Year’s, or as we like to say, “Hauoli Makahiki Hou”…see you in 2010!

My two BFF’s (Mik and Chris), and I are die-hard Green Day fans. American Idiot is probably my favorite album of all time. Its a rock opera, so we knew at some point, it HAD to be made into a musical show.

Sure enough, the musical is now playing at the Berkeley Theatre, and I went to see last week. Unfortunately, Miki and Chris now live in the Midwest and East Coast, so I wrote them a detailed recap of the show. Instead of writing another recap for a blog post, I’m just posting the email I sent them…

Happy Fall! Sorry this is a few days late, but life has been busy lately…

So I went to see the American Idiot Musical in Berkeley last Friday and to put it simply, it was fantastic! I so wish you two were there to see it with me.

Unfortunately, we got there late. I took BART into the City, had dinner, then we planned to take BART directly to Berkeley. Easy, right? Wrong. Stupid BART had all these delays. It took over an hour to get to Berkeley. Luckily, the theatre was just a block away from the Berkeley station.

When we got there, the doors were locked and I had a moment of panic where I thought they wouldn’t let us in at all. I almost started hyperventilating. But they did let us in but told us we couldn’t sit in our seats. Instead, we had to sit on these bar stools in the back, by the sound board. We didn’t care, we just wanted to get in asap! Turns out these bar stool seats were even better than our regular seats; they were facing the stage head on. It was like the Janet concert all over again.

By the time we got situated, we missed the first three songs:

1. American Idiot
2. Jesus of Suburbia (You know this is my favorite song off the whole album….I was in tears for missing it).
3. Holiday

We picked things up at Boulevard of Broken Dreams, but I was getting situated during the song and didn’t fully appreciate the performance. I figured out the storyline by Are We The Waiting/St Jimmy (Mik, I know is your fav).

The Storyline
So the story centers around not one, but three guys who start off in the same hometown and then go off in different directions. I had no idea three guys, I thought it was just about one! Did you know? Had we talked about this before?

The main guy is Johnny, the Jesus of Suburbia, and the other two guys are his friends, Tunny and Will. They all start out in the same suburban town but Johnny leaves for the city, gets hooked on drugs and St. Jimmy is created. Tunny joins the army and goes off to war, and Will, stays in suburbia, gets his girlfriend preggers and ends up hating his life. The other characters are Heather (Will’s gf), Whatshername – a girl Johnny meets in the city, The Extraordinary Girl (Tunny’s nurse when he gets injured at war, who he has delusional dreams about), and of course, St. Jimmy. St. Jimmy was the best cast role — the guy was seriously creepy, exactly how you’d expect St. Jimmy to be.

The Cast
I admit, I thought it was going to be a kinda amateurish production, but it really wasn’t! The cast was great! They were all experienced theatre professionals and I guess the main guy was in Spring Awakening, another rock musical. The three main guys not only sang well, they also played instruments throughout the show. Oh one funny thing was, there were these three guys off to the side who just stood there playing instruments. They totally looked like Green Day. I actually thought for a minute it might have been them. (Yeah, I didn’t have my glasses with me).

The Songs
So after St. Jimmy, here’s the rest of song order:

- Give Me Novacaine / She’s a Rebel: of course, I was singing along to this one the whole time.
- Last Night on Earth: this was a nice little surprise — four songs from the newest album! It was so unexpected!
- Too Much Too Soon: I hadn’t heard this one before.
- Before the Lobotomy: Hadn’t heard of this one either…or have I, and I just forget the name of it?
- Extraordinary Girl: this was probably my least favorite song on the album but now I love it.
- When It’s Time: This is a song that BJ wrote for his wife but never recorded.
- Know Your Enemy: From the new album.
- 21 Guns: I admit, I didn’t love this song until I saw it performed here. Now its on my playlist
- Letterbomb: This was performed by the ladies. I never would have thought to see it from a chic’s perspective! Who would have thought!?!
- Wake Me Up When Sept Ends: This was my favorite performance of the night. And not for a cheesy, slow song kind of reason, but because all three guys sang and played their guitars. They each sang different parts as it pertained to their own individual storyline at that moment in the show. It was moving, made me shed a tear.
- Homecoming: they broke this up into sub-sections of Death of St Jimmy, East 12th Street, Nobody Likes You, Rock & Roll Girlfriend, We’re Coming Home. This was the climax of the show where Johnny and Tunny come home and all three guys reunite. I was air-banding it again.
- Whatsername: in my opinion, the most underrated song on the whole album.

My Take
Bottom line — even though we missed the beginning, I still loved, loved, loved it. Was there any doubt I would? Hahaha.

    * Even though Green Day wasn’t there, you could tell Billie Joe played a huge role in putting together this production
* The general crowd was very un-Green Day-like — lots of older people, probably theatre regulars. I think anyone in general will like this show, but if you are a real fan, and truly know, love and have studied the album (like how we have analyzed it over and over again), then you will be so in love with this show that after you see it, you will want to go home and listen to the music while reading the lyrics…again. Umm, yeah I did.
* I found myself amazed at how one song, that was performed by three different people, applied to each character as they sang it…and you know what — in those moments of the story, the lyrics made perfect sense.
* After loving the album for the past 4-5 years, I only knew the music as BJ portrayed it. But now that I’ve seen it portrayed a different way,I see the songs from a whole different perspective.
* And while I appreciated BJ as a performer, I now appreciate him as a songwriter and storyteller. The man is just a talented a genius.

So this is probably more like a blog post than a regular email to you girls (actually I think I’ll just post this as a blog post) but this is pretty much the exact conversation we would have had, had we all seen it together, right?

I’m going back to see it again in a couple of weeks (in its entirety this time), but when this show hits Broadway, we’ll have to have a Girls Weekend in New York to see it together. I mean, after seeing them in concert at PacBell together, its only fitting that we see this together, right?!? Set the expectations with your husbands and babies now!

Loves,
‘Oms
